According to The Guardian’s early review, Lost Weekend contains several songs inspired by Bridgers’ past relationship with Mescal. The review also suggested the album explores other personal experiences, including her relationship with her late father. One lyric has drawn particular attention online. Fans have already begun debating its meaning, way before its scheduled release on August 14, 2026.
The review highlighted a line from The Governor’s Waltz. Bridges sings, “She can pretend to be me. Since she took my place in my bed, on that stage.” Several outlets have interpreted the lyrics as a possible reference to Abrams. However, Bridges has not identified anyone by name.
The review also pointed to the album’s title track. According to the publication, Bridgers sings, “I’m supposed to be married, but I called it off.” Critics have interpreted that lyric as confirming she was engaged to Mescal. Neither artist has publicly discussed any reported engagement.
Bridgers and Mescal dated for about two years before reportedly ending their relationship in 2022. Weeks later, Bridgers was linked to comedian BO Burnham. Mescal later began dating Abrams in 2024. The couple made their red carpet debut in 2025.
