Anne Hathaway is addressing a wave of online speculation after photos from a recent red carpet appearance put her pregnancy in the spotlight. The actor, who is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman, offered a brief response after some social media users questioned whether her visible baby bump was real.
Anne Hathaway addresses critics questioning her baby bump
Hathaway responded directly to the fake pregnancy claims on Aug. 10 with an Instagram Reel from the premiere of The End of Oak Street. In the caption, she wrote, “Fake hair, real bump,” before inviting followers behind the scenes of the event.
The viral baby bump photos came from the film’s Aug. 9 premiere in Burbank, California. As previously seen on the red carpet, Hathaway wore an ice-blue Prabal Gurung halter top with a cropped front and low-rise jeans, leaving her stomach visible.
People reported that the look prompted several social media comments questioning whether her bump was authentic. Hathaway did not engage with individual critics. Instead, her short Instagram caption appeared to address the speculation with humor while making her position clear.
The Oscar winner first announced her pregnancy on June 19 through another Instagram post. In the video, Hathaway stepped into frame wearing a flowing white outfit before revealing and cradling her baby bump. She and Shulman already share two sons.
Her pregnancy has also overlapped with a busy stretch of movie promotion. Hathaway recently promoted Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, in which she plays Penelope, and has made several public appearances while pregnant.
During a July appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Hathaway said she and Shulman were surprised that they were expecting again. She jokingly described their third baby as a “buzzer-beater,” a nickname she has explained publicly before.
The latest speculation did not prompt a lengthy statement from Hathaway. Her response was only a few words, but it left little room for confusion about how she viewed the claims.
