Jennifer Lopez has faced plenty of “diva” stories during her long career, and a former TV staffer is now adding another backstage tale to the list. The former Top of the Pops employee claims J.Lo once made an unusual request that transformed an otherwise basic dressing room before her appearance on the show.
Ex-staffer exposes Jennifer Lopez’s diva behavior backstage
Former Top of the Pops assistant floor manager Gareth Davies recalled Lopez when asked about the biggest celebrity demands he witnessed backstage. “Jennifer Lopez, for sure,” he told Zingo Bingo.
Davies said the dressing rooms at Elstree Studios were simple and old-fashioned. However, he claimed Lopez wanted hers completely transformed. According to Davies, the Jennifer Lopez dressing room became an all-white space from top to bottom.
Rather than paint the room, her team allegedly covered it with white plastic sheeting. Davies called the setup unusual, especially because the dressing rooms sat along a narrow corridor and were otherwise nothing special.
The alleged Jennifer Lopez diva demands stood out in Davies’ memory even after years of working with major artists. His job involved collecting performers backstage and guiding them to the studio floor for their performances.
Lopez did have a documented connection to the BBC music institution. The BBC Programme Index lists her among the performers at the inaugural Top of the Pops Awards in December 2001. The event also featured Kylie Minogue, Mariah Carey, and Nelly Furtado.
Still, Lopez has challenged the broader “diva” label before. During a 2011 Vanity Fair interview, she addressed reports about elaborate white dressing-room decor. Lopez said her manager, Benny Medina, made sure she had comfortable surroundings because they worked intense schedules, and she felt she received blame for treatment that other stars also received.
Davies’ new account does not claim Lopez mistreated him or other staff members. His story focuses on the room itself and the lengths allegedly taken to change its appearance.
Lopez remains known for carefully polished performances and presentation. More recently, reports have also focused on the preparation behind her Las Vegas stage show, where sources claimed even seemingly spontaneous moments received plenty of rehearsal.
