Michael Jackson‘s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, addressed the criticism surrounding the King of Pop’s biopic. The actor responded to the criticism that the film could be whitewashing his image and avoiding some of the allegations against him.
Jaafar Jackson says the second Michael film could offer more insight into allegations
Jaafar Jackson, who plays Michael Jackson in the biopic Michael, discussed the film in a September cover interview with GQ Magazine.
The biopic has faced criticism over how it handles allegations that Michael Jackson abused underage boys.
Jaafar said, “I think the second film will give even more insight from his point of view, because at the end of the day, [the allegations] are always from someone else’s.”
However, the actor said the screenplay for the second part remains in development. He also clarified that he has no control over the storyline.
Speaking about playing his uncle, Jaafar said, “I experienced the best I could experience as an artist on a stage as Michael. Me doing it as Jaafar would feel weird.”
Meanwhile, Jaafar also reflected on seeing Michael’s fans when he was younger. According to the Daily Mail, he said, “I still can remember how loud it was in there and the fans going crazy for my uncles on the stage.”
“That was probably the first moment that it hit me, Oh, they’re important,” he added.
Still, Jaafar stressed that filmmakers will decide how the sequel presents Michael’s perspective. They will also determine how much the film explores the controversial allegations.
Michael arrived in theaters in April this year. The second part of the biopic is expected to follow in the coming years.
