Nancy Grace criticized investigators for ruling out foul play too early in investigation

During an episode of her Crime Stories show, Nancy Grace discussed Hayden Panettiere’s death.

Grace called the early dismissal of foul play irresponsible. She said, “When I find a dead body, I don’t just assume there’s no foul play. That’s completely irresponsible.”

Grace then asked investigative reporter Dave Mack to “throw [her] a bone” and share more details about the case, according to Us Weekly.

She asked, “Who? What? Where? When? Why? Where was she found? When was she found? Give me the circumstances. What was found at the scene? Was anybody there? Help me out, Dave.”

Mack responded, “This happened in Greenville, South Carolina, at the Judson Mill Lofts. This is a building complex that was a textile mill converted into apartments and living quarters that were used for Airbnb purposes.”

Mack said an acquaintance called 911 after finding Panettiere unresponsive. The Greenville County Coroner later said the autopsy showed no signs of trauma that contributed to her death.

Police also said Brian Hickerson and his brother were present when officers arrived. Investigators reportedly requested CCTV footage and a search warrant for the apartment.

Panettiere died at age 36 on Aug. 16. Her father, Skip Panettiere, remembered her in a statement shared by a spokesperson.

“She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy,” he said. He also asked for privacy during the difficult time.

Grace maintained that ruling out foul play at this stage was irresponsible.

Investigators have not identified evidence of foul play, while the official cause of death remains under investigation.
