Theo James appeared to end speculation about his future as James Bond 007. The actor said the iconic role carried career and family consequences he no longer wanted.
James had long ranked among the actors linked to replacing Daniel Craig. His latest comments, however, suggested someone else would inherit cinema’s most famous tuxedo.
Theo James says he is ‘too old’ for James Bond and worries the role could define his career
In an interview with British GQ, Theo James addressed the persistent James Bond casting rumors directly.
“I’m definitely too old now, for one,” the 41-year-old actor said.
Age, however, did not appear to concern him most. James also feared becoming permanently associated with one enormous role.
“That would be an example of a place you could never come back from,” he explained.
James also considered how James Bond fame could affect his family. He shares two young children with wife Ruth Kearney.
“Imagine, suddenly, you and I cannot walk down the street,” James said.
“What that does to your children, who are trying to find themselves in the midst of hyper-scrutiny and fame.”
He added, “None of that, to me, is worth it.”
Daniel Craig ended his James Bond actor run with 2021’s No Time to Die. His departure left the next 007 role wide open.
James had seemed like a natural contender because of his British charm and action credentials. Still, he appeared comfortable letting another actor take the franchise’s considerable baggage.
Other names continued circulating around James Bond 2026 casting discussions. Callum Turner and Jack Lowden reportedly emerged among bookmakers’ leading favorites.
Turner previously refused to discuss the rumors. When questioned by Esquire, he reportedly said, “I’m not going to comment on that either.”
Lowden also kept his cards close. He previously told UNILAD, “I still really am not over the fact that Daniel Craig doesn’t do it anymore.”
Amazon MGM Studios now controlled the franchise creatively. Denis Villeneuve had signed on to direct Bond 26, while Steven Knight wrote the screenplay.
Producer Amy Pascal also told Deadline, “I would say the end of the year is a good bet.”
That timeline suggested the next James Bond actor could finally emerge before 2026 ended. Theo, meanwhile, appeared happy to leave the martini ordering elsewhere.
