For Miley Cyrus, Dolly Parton was never simply a legendary country singer or famous godmother. She was a beloved mentor, family friend and, in many ways, a second mother. The pair shared a remarkably close bond that began before Miley could even remember. Billy Ray Cyrus asked Parton to become Miley’s godmother after her birth in 1992. Parton accepted and remained a major presence in Miley’s life for decades.
Miley Cyrus reportedly viewed Dolly Parton as a second mother
“I’ve known her since she was a baby,” Parton said during a 2009 appearance on Good Morning America. She also described Miley as being “just like one of my own.” Their relationship grew beyond family gatherings. Parton became someone Miley could turn to for advice about her career and personal life. Miley once praised her as the “world’s best godmother” and said she felt incredibly lucky to have her.
Their bond also played out through their music. The pair collaborated on Miley’s 2017 song “Rainbowland,” while Parton later covered Miley’s “Wrecking Ball” for her 2023 album “Rockstar.”
They also performed “Jolene” together several times. Their performances included a 2010 television special, “The Voice” in 2016, and the 2019 Grammy Awards. Parton also appeared as “Aunt Dolly” on Miley’s Disney series “Hannah Montana.” Their connection gave the show an extra dose of family charm while introducing a new generation to Parton.
Miley later made it clear that their relationship meant much more to her than their official godmother-goddaughter title. In a 2024 interview with W Magazine, she said, “Dolly’s been like a mother to me.”
Miley also treasured Parton’s quirky way of communicating. She recalled receiving faxes from her godmother instead of regular messages and joked about Parton’s old-fashioned approach to technology. Parton’s influence remained important throughout Miley’s career. Earlier this year, Miley even credited advice from her godmother while discussing the “Hannah Montana” anniversary special: “She told me that if you want something to happen, promote it before it exists. Then no one can say no.”
Parton died at 80 on August 25, according to reports. Miley has not publicly addressed her death yet, while Billy Ray shared an emotional tribute remembering their decades-long friendship. For Miley, Parton’s legacy appears deeply personal. She was not merely her godmother. She was someone who helped guide, encourage and love her throughout her life.
