Lil Nas X announced that his mother, Tameka Hill, had died in an emotional, social media tribute. The Grammy winner shared several family photos while reflecting on the pain of losing someone he loved.
On Saturday, August 29, the “Old Town Road” rapper posted three photos of Hill on Instagram. One showed her posing alone, another captured mother and son at an event, while the final image showed Hill with Nas during his childhood.

“RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt. ??,” Nas, 27, wrote on Instagram. Hill’s age and cause of death had not been publicly disclosed, and representatives for the musician did not immediately respond to the publication’s request for comment.
Nas had previously spoken about his complicated relationship with his mother. During a 2020 interview with Variety, he described Hill as an “addict” while acknowledging that love remained between them.
“She’s an addict, so we don’t have the closest relationship,” Nas told the outlet. “Even trying to get her better — things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love.” The loss came during an especially personal chapter for the artist. Just days earlier, Nas celebrated his 10,000th day alive by sharing a video of a homemade cake on Instagram Stories.
“So, tomorrow is my 10,000th day alive and…I made it!” he said. “A lot of y’all won’t make it but I made it.”
Nas had also returned to social media in June after spending nearly a year away. He discussed spending time with family and friends after entering rehab and described working with a therapist and psychiatrist.
In that June 17 update, Nas said receiving a bipolar disorder diagnosis helped explain experiences he had struggled with privately. He also thanked fans for supporting him through the difficult period. “I love you and all I want to do is continue to try to make you guys proud and make myself proud,” he said.
Now, the singer faced another deeply personal loss while navigating that new chapter. His tribute to Hill offered only a brief glimpse into their relationship, but its message was unmistakable: love remained, even through the pain.
