Royal expert Jennie Bond believes Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could become a major “distraction” for the royal family after returning to the U.K. The couple is said to be settling into their new life in Britain before their children begin at their new schools. They have yet to make a major public appearance since the alleged move.
However, that could soon change. Simultaneously, King Charles, Prince William, and Kate Middleton will be resuming their royal duties following the summer break. That overlap could put Harry’s activities in direct competition with the family’s official engagements for media attention.
Bond, a former BBC royal correspondent, told Mirror that one of the “biggest challenges” for the working royals could be having their work “overshadowed” by the Sussexes. As such, she believes this could particularly frustrate William.
The expert also pointed to Harry’s work with the Invictus Games. As he prepares to promote the 2027 event, his public appearances could generate significant interest. Bond suggested that this may make the situation feel like a “competition,” even if that is not the intention.
For now, Harry could seemingly have the advantage. Bond said the “novelty of having him and his family back” in Britain could initially draw more attention than the work of senior royals. That, she explained, could mean “less news coverage” for the charities and campaigns supported by William and other working members of the family.
The brothers also continue to have a strained relationship. Per the outlet, royal sources have claimed William and Charles remain “united” in opposing any suggestion of a “half in, half out” role for Harry and Markle. At the same time, friends of William and Middleton have indicated that the couple wants to focus on the future rather than revisit old conflicts.
Still, Bond believes there is room for a more peaceful outcome. The expert hopes the family can eventually find a way to “live in harmony” and move beyond the long-running rift.
