Brendan Fraser was once one of Hollywood’s brightest, but things did not unravel in the best possible way for the actor. But it did not stop him for good. Fraser returned triumphantly with his Oscar-winning performance in The Whale. But that was not enough for him to gain endless confidence. Speaking about his new movie, Rental Family, Fraser delved into this.
Brendan Fraser talks about struggling with confidence
Brendan Fraser played the role of a struggling American actor in Hikari’s drama set in Japan. The Mummy star spoke about this film to the Associated Press in a recent interview, where he hinted that the role almost served as a reminder to him, saying, “Don’t get too comfortable. It can happen to me.”
He admitted, “I struggle with confidence. I always have the feeling of not being good enough. Believe me, no one can be harder on me than me. No critic, no pithy internet comment can be more biting to me than myself in my private thoughts.”
Winning the Oscar did not change this a lot. Brendan Fraser added, “I grapple with overcoming that,” and recalled the time Lorne Michaels of SNL told him, “You know, it’s all about confidence.” He added, “I don’t know if that psyched me up or not.” Fraser wondered, “Forget everything you know and just own it. Can you do that is the question, the eternal one.”
The 56-year-old answered if winning an Oscar changed things for him, saying, “Honestly, I was kind of floating during that whole time without an agent…I was looking for that unicorn project that hadn’t been made into oblivion. I ended up: What is a rental family? Which dog do you like at the pound? I like the one with four teeth and one tweaky eye.”
During this session, Fraser also claimed that going to Japan to shoot and immersing himself in the culture was something he “needed.”
There are plenty of other projects lined up for Brendan Fraser, including a possible new sequel to The Mummy. Meanwhile, his Rental Family is currently playing in theaters.
