Madison Prewett from The Bachelor has always been open about her beliefs and how her religion helps shape her life. Some people may not understand her, but she’s always willing to open up about the decisions she makes. This time, she’s providing “context” to her comment about a “submissive wife” amid online backlash.
Madi Prewett and her husband Grant Troutt addressed the comments head-on
Bachelor fans will remember Madi from Peter Weber’s season and their short-lived relationship, resulting in her self-elimination. But Madi’s moved on since then. She married boyfriend Grant Troutt in 2022. The couple had a daughter this year.
Madi is no stranger to controversial comments. Last July, she revealed that she and Grant would be spanking their daughter (“in a loving way”) as a form of discipline. This was met with mixed reactions. Now, she finds herself in the hot seat again for saying, “Being a submissive wife is now her favorite thing.”
The backlash was swift. One commenter on her podcast said, “May this life never find me,” while another likened her comments to A Handmaid’s Tale.
Madi and Grant took to her Stay True podcast to give context to their meaning of the words submissive and submit. Madi said she understood that people could take it badly without context and apologized for those who felt it was confusing and hurtful.
For them, submission is not about not being an equal or having a voice or being weak, oppressed, or abused. They look at it from the point of view of the Bible. Grant shared that the word comes from Ephesians 5, where Paul lays the blueprint for a godly marriage. The quote is “Wives submit to your husbands.”
Madi added that submission doesn’t mean Grant is domineering. It means that “Grant is the provider and protector of the home and I get to come under his care, not that ‘I have to’ but in a way where I feel safe,” Madi explained. It’s a way for her to respect and honor Grant and for others to “see Jesus in their relationship.”
In the end, Madi reiterated that submission to her means “honor, respect, and viewing it as we have equal rights.”
The Bachelor is streaming on Hulu.
