Ethan Hawke Calls Out Rose Byrne for Historic Critique

The New York Film Critics Circle took place last week. Ethan Hawke was tasked with presenting a trophy to Rose Byrne, and he couldn’t resist using the opportunity to settle a score. You see, back in 2010, Rose wrote a review of Ethan’s first book. And that review was… not good.

Rose Byrne wasn’t a fan of Ethan Hawke’s first novel

At the awards ceremony on January 6, Ethan presented the Best Actress title to Rose. But first, he brought up that review. He told the crowd: “There are some actors here who, at the beginning of their careers, were critics too. Rose Byrne liked to write reviews for a little paper called Goodreads. And she reviewed my first novel, which she said ‘it reads like a poor man’s attempt at a Ryan Adams song. Remember that, Rose?”

He added: “It’s a testament to how much I love your acting that I didn’t give a sh*t. I was glad you read my book!”

His remarks were, of course, all in jest (unless he’s been hanging onto that resentment for a really long time). And Rose looked amused and embarrassed in equal measure.

On accepting the award, she said: “Thank you, Ethan. I never thought you would read that review, ever! EVER! Goodreads … it’s so daggy! Like, no one reads it!”

The review in question was for Ethan’s first novel, The Hottest State, released in 2001. The book currently has a rating of 3.37 on the site. And as for Rose’s review, it’s still up for all to enjoy.

It reads: “Released 13 years ago so i am a bit behind but found it lazing around on set and was a lovely easy read for a couple of days. its kind of like a ryan adams song but not as good.”
