America’s Next Top Model was a reality competition show that defined a generation. Everyone loved the inside look at the fashion world and followed along as host Tyra Banks found a new generation of top models. However, as glitzy and glamorous as ANTM was, it was also very controversial. Now, Netflix is giving viewers a look back at the show that asked contestants if they had “what it takes to be America’s next top model?”
Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model streams on Netflix in February
Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model premieres this February on Netflix. It’s another in a series of documentaries looking at popular and controversial topics and personalities.
In this series, Netflix brings back the OG cast and several contestants of America’s Next Top Model. They look back on their experiences and share their thoughts on the grueling competition and how it impacted the fashion world and an entire generation’s perception of beauty.
“I haven’t really said much,” Tyra said in the trailer. “But now it’s time.”
The trailer then shows a compilation of clips of the show from both triumphs and controversies. Jay Manuel, Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, and more join Tyra to talk about their time on the viral juggernaut that pulled in over 100 million viewers at its peak.
America’s Next Top Model was created by Tyra, Ken Mok, and Kenya Barris. It ran for 24 seasons (or cycles). Each season had a new crop of aspiring models willing to do whatever it took to win.
The series was groundbreaking and spotlighted contestants from communities that the fashion industry typically overlooked. However, it also became known for body shaming, outlandish stunts, sometimes scary compulsory transformations that even included medical procedures, and shoots that may have crossed lines.
“It was wrong, but for some reason, no one seemed to see it,” Nigel admitted in the documentary.
“I knew I went too far,” Tyra shared. ‘It was very, very intense. But you guys were demanding it, so we kept pushing more and more and more.”
It looks like an exciting look behind the scenes of a show that everyone was “rooting for,” and we can’t wait!
