Donald Trump made an awkward blunder at the premiere of his wife’s docufilm on January 29.
Walking the red carpet at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC for the debut screening of Melania Trump’s self-titled documentary, the US President was asked questions about her … and seemingly forgot which country she is from.
Did President Trump forget First Lady Melania’s home country?
“Well, I am proud of her,” Trump said of the First Lady at the premiere, per a video doing the rounds on X. He then went on to speak about her background, and notably didn’t mention the country she is from: Slovenia.
“She comes from a faraway country,” he said, describing it as “a wonderful country, clean, beautiful, safe.”
Trump continued: “They don’t have problems like others have, but she comes from a country that’s a very safe country. [A] good country in many ways, but it’s different.”
Next, Trump commented on how Melania “speaks a lot of languages” and is “very smart.” The same wasn’t said about the President in response to the clip, however.
“He has no idea what country his wife is from,” said @evagolinger on X. “He forgot where his wife is from, didn’t he?” agreed @Iget2bme72.
“I’d take a bet that if you put her in a lineup with half a dozen other women, he wouldn’t be able to pick her out,” added @voblat. “A reporter should’ve followed up by asking him to name that country,” responded @ManiamAkash.
Melania: Twenty Days to History, now in cinemas, follows the First Lady in the run-up to Trump’s second inauguration. Speaking at the premiere, Melania – who also produced the film – said she wanted to “show other people what it takes to go from being a private citizen to First Lady again.”
