Gordon – who established himself as a head chef in the early nineties and has since fronted numerous TV shows – this week told PEOPLE he doesn’t think people “fully understand” his childhood.

Recalling how his mom worked three jobs, the celebrity chef said this taught him to be “so appreciative” and “never take things for granted.” This also gave him the work ethic he has become infamous for.

“There’s this relentless pursuit of whatever you’ve got and how you’ve got it,” he explained. “You never want to lose it, and so you are so much more careful about what you do, how you do it. You go into it at a thousand miles an hour.”

After being “dealt dysfunctional cards growing up,” Gordon said he had to cook his way “out of that mess.”

Elsewhere, the Hell’s Kitchen star revealed how his strained relationship with his father impacts how he parents his own kids. Gordon and his wife have six children, ranging from ages two to 27.

“I, sadly, had a torrid relationship with my father,” he admitted. “In many ways, I’m using that awful relationship to become a better dad.”

Being Gordon Ramsay airs on Netflix from February 18. It follows the celebrity chef behind the scenes as he juggles family life, a global empire, and his biggest launch yet, per the synopsis.
