Luke Combs is not a man who wants to conform.
Speaking to the New York Times’ Popcast podcast, the country star opened up about his struggle with his body image. In the interview, he admitted he has “struggled” with his weight during his life. However, he remains reluctant to jump on the celebrity bandwagon for weight-loss drugs.
Luke Combs says weight-loss drugs “scare” him
In the interview, Luke admitted that he has struggled to lose weight, despite his desire to do so. “It bugs me a lot that I can’t figure it out,” he said. He did, however, have an optimistic outlook on how difficult he finds the challenge. “I don’t want my life to be this life of like, ease and like, everything’s easy. I like when stuff’s hard.”
This mentality is, in part, why he doesn’t want to use drugs to help him with weight loss, despite their popularity with celebrities. GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, have become widely prescribed in recent years, even though they were originally intended for diabetes treatment.
GLP-1 drugs also have widely reported side effects, which has also influenced Luke’s decision to be wary of them. “As dumb as that sounds, that stuff scares me more than I think that I would enjoy the benefits of,” he said.
He admitted that he worries body shaming may play a role in how his music career is received. “One of my biggest fears is like, man, maybe I don’t get a shot just ‘cause of the way I look,” Luke said on the podcast.
“You know what I mean? And like, that was a hard pill to swallow, because you can’t really change the way you look.”
“No matter how hard I try, it’s just been like this impossible nut to crack for me,” he said regarding weight loss. “And I will do it, but I’m not going to do it the short way.”
