The photo, which Zohran Mamdani shared on X, shows the two New Yorkers standing at the Resolute Desk with Donald Trump displaying what many described as an unexpectedly warm smile. The mayor characterized their white house meeting as “productive” and expressed optimism about future collaboration on housing initiatives.

Social media reactions poured in almost immediately, with users focusing on Trump’s expression. One commenter joked, “Eric Trump has never seen that smile in his life.” Another quipped, “Find someone who smiles around you the way Trump smiles next to Mamdani.” A third user added, “Trump is in love with Mamdani!!”

While some also praised the mayor’s approach. One supporter wrote, “You’re one of the greatest Mayors we’ve ever had. I’m so proud to have voted for you, and so do many other New Yorkers.” Another comment highlighted the bipartisan potential: “Great job, Mamdani! Bipartisan housing wins over partisan pettiness.”

The photo included a notable prop: Trump holding two mocked-up newspaper front pages. One displayed the infamous 1973 New York Daily News headline about President Gerald Ford denying federal bailout funds to a bankrupt New York City. The other, a fake printout, showed a picture of Trump with the headline “Trump to City: Let’s Build” and a subheading reading “Trump Delivers 12,000+ Homes; Most Since 1973.”

Mamdani’s chief spokesperson, Joe Calvello, confirmed to the Guardian that the mayor’s team created the prop newspapers specifically for the presentation. He revealed that Mamdani proposed a housing project “with an estimated 12,000 units,” and Trump “appeared enthusiastic” about the concept, though no timeline or location details have come out from the discussion.
