Kanye West is getting it from all angles. Earlier this week, his request to enter the UK was denied, prompting the swift cancellation of a festival he was due to headline. Now, the comedians over on Saturday Night Live UK have taken the opportunity to make a dig at the controversial rapper.
Wireless Festival was cancelled entirely after the Home Office decision
To recap, it was recently announced that Kanye would headline Wireless Festival in London this July. While some fans were happy about the news, the decision to put Kanye – who has repeatedly displayed antisemitic behaviour – in the headliner spot recieved widespread backlash, including from the British Prime Minister.
Although Kanye apologized for his controversial comments (see: a full-page advert in the Wall Street Journal in January), his request to enter the UK for the festival was denied. This prompted organizers of Wireless to cancel the event altogether.
“Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent,” Festival Republic said in a statement. “We recognise the real and personal impact these issues have had.”
Since all of this went down, social media has been awash with reactions. Fans and critics have waded in … as have the comics over at SNL UK. In a TikTok shared shortly afterwards, the likes of Jack Whitehall, Emma Sidi, and Larry Dean poked fun at Kanye.
Blink, and you’ll miss it, but the opening seconds of the sketch show Jack ripping Kanye’s name from a bulletin board of potential hosts. “Kanye on SNL UK would be generational,” someone said in the comments in response. “Pulling the Kanye card is chef’s kiss,” added another person.
“You guys are fast!” a third person said of how quickly the comics turned the joke around. “That Kanye joke is fantastic,” commented someone else.
