Donald Trump Changes His Stance on NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani

President Donald Trump has criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over the recently proposed NYC tax. It is a change from the relatively cooperative tone Trump showed during earlier White House meetings, whilst Mamdani still maintains the same.

Donald Trump says Zohran Mamdani is ‘destroying NYC’

Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul revealed a new NYC tax targeting second homes worth more than $5 million. The proposal aims to generate $500 million and help address a projected $5.4 billion budget deficit.

Donald Trump criticized the same on Truth Social, writing, “Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance! The United States of America should not contribute to its failure.” He doubled down on his criticism of the NYC tax, adding, “It will only get WORSE. The TAX, TAX, TAX Policies are SO WRONG. People are fleeing. They must change their ways, AND FAST. History has proven, THIS ‘STUFF’ JUST DOESN’T WORK.”

However, Mamdani’s plan is part of a broader effort to deal with what he described as a “generational fiscal crisis.” He said the tax focuses on ultra-wealthy property owners and is “worthy of celebration” given the city’s financial challenges. Hochul supported the policy, stating, “If you can afford a $5 million second home that sits empty most of the year, you can afford to contribute like every other New Yorker” (via The Hill).

Now, Trump’s change in stance is further noted as on the same day of the Truth Social post, Mamdani insisted the working relationship still functions beneath the public noise. He confirmed on CBS Mornings that he and the president remain in contact. “There is one place of agreement that we have, which is that we both love New York City,” Mamdani said.

He described the dynamic as a classic New York story where two people with wildly different views can still find common ground. Trump hasn’t yet commented on this.
