President Donald Trump is facing a credibility crisis, according to new polling data, which reveals that a majority of Americans believe he is less honest than his political counterparts. The latest NBC News Decision Desk Poll shows the president’s approval rating plunging to the lowest point of his second term as public frustration mounts over the economy and the ongoing Iran war.
Americans poll on Donald Trump speaking the truth
The survey paints a stark picture of public trust. When respondents were asked if Donald Trump tells the truth more often or less often than other politicians, a decisive 52% answered “less often.” Only 27% believe he tells the truth “more often,” while 21% see him as about the same.
This polling data comes as Donald Trump recently got corrected for misinformation regarding Pope Leo and the Iran war. During a media interaction, CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins asked about the ongoing friction with the Pope. Trump responded, “I have nothing against the pope.” Before adding, “The pope made a statement. He says Iran can have a nuclear weapon. I say Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”
Donald Trump was then corrected by the anchor that Pope Leo made no such declaration. Since. The latter’s position has been well documented, and based on public records, he has only condemned the war and asked for an end to it.
Moreover, this trust gap is reflected in his overall job performance numbers, which have deteriorated significantly. Only 37% of adults approve of the president’s performance, while 63% disapprove, a figure that includes half of all respondents who said they strongly disapprove.
The Iran war and other issues like inflation are driving Donald Trump’s approval rating down. Two-thirds of Americans specifically disapprove of Trump’s handling of the war with Iran. Even following the announcement of a temporary ceasefire on April 7, the poll found no significant shift in public perception, with disapproval remaining stubbornly high among both Democrats and independents.
