Pete Hegseth Called Out By Democratic Senators Over Iran War

A host of senators, all hailing from the Democratic Party, have banded together to highlight Donald Trump’s Secretary of War Pete Hegseth over his inadequacies in the Iran war. In order to express their concern over Hegseth’s leadership in the Middle Eastern conflict, the group penned a lengthy note, asking the government official to explain decisions that seemingly violated federal as well as international laws.

Democratic Senators question Pete Hegseth’s moves against Iran

A total of 11 Senate members, under the leadership of Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, have submitted a letter to Pete Hegseth’s office, demanding answers regarding his questionable actions in the ongoing tussle against Iran by May 4.

In the letter, the senators talked about four different attacks sanctioned by the US in Iran, including a Tomahawk missile strike on an elementary school in Minab that claimed 175 lives, as well as a Precision Strike Missile attack in Lamerd that resulted in 21 deaths. By pointing out the strikes, the senators highlighted concerns “that these were all preventable tragedies.”

“The high human toll of this war reflects the administration’s broader disregard for the strategic, legal, and moral imperative to minimize civilian harm,” the Democrats noted.

Additionally, the senators called out Pete Hegseth’s March 13 declaration about the Iran war, wherein he claimed that the US would show “no mercy for our enemies.” They mentioned that the Secretary of War’s statements were in direct violation of the Defense Department’s Law of War Manual. Such remarks would not only make things difficult for US troops but could also incite an aggressive response from Iran, the lawmakers argued.

Lastly, the senators criticized Hegseth for cutting down Pentagon work that focused on preventing civilian harm. While they emphasized that protecting civilians during combat was “essential for the US military’s operational effectiveness,” the senators noted that Pete Hegseth’s actions in the Iran war directly contradicted this belief.

“Thousands of innocent people are dead after the Trump administration gutted programs meant to prevent civilian harm,” Elizabeth Warren exclaimed in a statement. “Hegseth’s chaos and incompetence are a danger to both civilians and our troops. We need answers and accountability now.”
