Security’s handling of Saturday’s shooting incident raises plenty of questions. Joe Scarborough called it “extraordinarily stupid” to hold the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in an open hotel. Joe is blasting them after shots were fired during the gala event, causing plenty of panic inside. Cole Thomas Allen was arrested after getting into the event with a couple of firearms and knives, according to reports. Joe isn’t buying Donald Trump’s praise for how secutity handled things.
The dinner took place at the Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., as it traditionally does. Joe is calling out the security team’s actions, believing they weren’t focused throughout the evening.
Joe Scarborough wasn’t impressed by the response
Joe has some choice words for those tasked with protecting people at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. In Monday’s edition of Morning Joe, the former politician turned host said, for security to be “walking around, going in and out of parties, standing to get their pictures taken before they go in, it’s never made sense to me.” He went on to note that many standard practices reportedly weren’t carried out before people entered the event. That includes checking bags. “You’re not doing the basic things,” according to Joe.
It isn’t just security that Joe has issues with. He says holding the dinner at the Hilton in the US capital is an accident waiting to happen. Joe calls it an “unsecure place.” His words contradict Donald Trump’s assessment of law enforcement. He says that when they arrived, he felt “very, very safe.”
Given what’s going on in the Middle East, Joe is equally confused as to why security was apparently so light. Because of the Iran crisis, Joe thinks a better location should have been chosen. In addition, more security officials should have been keeping an eye on what was happening inside.
While not everyone can get into the gala, the hotel isn’t closed to the public for the White House Correspondents’ dinner. People can come and go freely from the hotel lobby. The White House has said security acted properly, even though Secret Service personnel were on hand for the event. The event will reportedly be rescheduled within 30 days.
