Macaulay Culkin Opens up About How Catherine O’Hara’s Death Affected Him

Macaulay Culkin said Catherine O’Hara’s death left him feeling unfinished after decades of shared history. The former child star reflected on his late “Home Alone” mother while looking back at career memories. A new interview showed him tying her loss to his unusual Hollywood childhood. The bond also reached back to their 2023 Walk of Fame reunion, where O’Hara publicly praised his work. It placed private grief beside the film’s lasting public legacy.

As per Gentleman’s Journal interview, Macaulay Culkin discussed O’Hara while reflecting on his past. He said her January death “hit me” and “hit me pretty good.” The actor added that it felt “just too soon.” Then, he said they had “unfinished business” after years of knowing each other. Culkin also said, “I feel like I owed her a favor.” He added, “I don’t like having an outstanding debt.”

The bond went back to “Home Alone” and its 1992 sequel, “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.” O’Hara played Kate McCallister, mother to Culkin’s Kevin McCallister. Meanwhile, PEOPLE reported on May 12 that he posted an Instagram tribute. PEOPLE said O’Hara died in January after a brief private illness. He wrote, “Mama. I thought we had time.” He added, “I wanted more,” and “I had so much more to say.” The actor closed that message with, “I love you” and “I’ll see you later.”

O’Hara also supported Culkin at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in December 2023. She said, “I know you worked really hard.” She added that he “made acting look like the most natural thing in the world.” For context, Culkin was 10 when “Home Alone” made him a global star. He later told Gentleman’s Journal he had lost many older co-stars. He named John Heard, John Candy, Burt Lancaster, and Farrah Fawcett. Culkin said he was “the caboose” of that old Hollywood circle.
