Stephen Colbert recently sat down with PEOPLE before he hosts the final episode of The Late Show. During the interview, the comedian and political commentator got candid about the show’s cancellation and his thoughts on whether the move was politically motivated.

Colbert talked about whether he will miss being a major voice in daily political conversations as part of his job. “I’ll never stop caring about my country,” he stated. “I’m a perfectly fine fan of me, but I am not of the opinion that if my voice is missing from the national conversation the republic will turn awry,” Colbert declared.

The Late Show’s cancellation news was announced in July 2025, shortly after Colbert had slammed Paramount Global for reaching a $16 million settlement with Trump. Since then, there has been widespread speculation that the cancellation of his show was politically motivated. However, at the time, CBS stated that the cancellation was “purely a financial decision.”

Amid ongoing speculation, Colbert stated that he has no “fear” of the Trump administration. He stated, “I mean, how silly would it be? The ending of the show aside, which people can speculate about all they want, and I can’t argue with their speculations, but we’re clowns. How much does it diminish the office of the Presidency to even notice what we say?”

Colbert went on to say, “[Trump] needs to know how to pick his battles, I mean metaphorically and literally.” The comedian and writer admitted that the aspect of the job he will miss is “the camaraderie of us feeling better about our day. I harvest laughter for a living. I’ll miss that as much as I’ll miss the audience.”
