Sydney Sweeney’s $400M R-Rated Movie Gets an Update

Sydney Sweeney’s hit R-rated film, The Housemaid, is all set to be adapted for the stage. Lionsgate is turning the best-selling book and box-office hit movie into a play. Notably, The Housemaid is penned by Freida McFadden and was adapted for the big screen, starring Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester and Sweeney as her housemaid, Millie Calloway, who has a dark past.

Sydney Sweeney’s The Housemaid to get a stage adaptation

Sydney Sweeney’s runaway hit The Housemaid is set to get a stage adaptation. It seems like after the success of The Housemaid movie, Lionsgate is going all out with the franchise. The Housemaid, which was made on a budget of $35 million, grossed a mammoth $400 million at the global box office. Besides a stage production, the sequel to the first film is expected to start production later this year. The Housemaid’s sequel will reportedly release on December 17 next year.

Variety reports that producers Melting Pot, a British company led by Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska are developing the stage play. Not only that, playwright Bekah Brunstetter has also joined hands with Melting Pot. However, the production timeline remains unclear.

Lionsgate’s president of global products and experiences, Jenefer Brown issued a statement as well. Brown said, “The Housemaid has all the elements for a successful stage adaptation – a blockbuster title, compelling characters, and a story full of twists and turns that builds tension and momentum in a way that naturally lends itself to the stage. This project reflects how our hit films and IP can be transformed into novel experiences.”

Fans who have read the book and watched the movie are aware of the fact that the endings are completely different. Hence, it would be interesting to see what approach the makers adapt for the stage play. With the stage version of The Housemaid, Friend wants to “heighten its intensity.”
