Meghan Markle reportedly gave an unexpected response when King Charles III offered to walk her down the aisle ahead of her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, according to royal author Robert Hardman. The royal wedding at St George’s Chapel came after weeks of behind-the-scenes tension.
This included reported disagreements over bridesmaids’ dresses, tiaras, and last-minute planning complications. The biggest personal blow for Meghan, however, was the absence of her father, Thomas Markle, who did not attend the ceremony.
King Charles was surprised by Meghan Markle’s response to his wedding gesture, per author
Ahead of her lavish 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was reportedly dealing with a lot for her wedding ceremony at St George’s Chapel. Although it may have looked picture-perfect to the world, preparations behind palace doors were said to be far more stressful. Reports at the time pointed to disagreements over several wedding issues. However, amid the chaos, Markle was also dealing with the absence of her father, Thomas Markle, who was not able to attend, according to The Mirror.
To make this moment better, stepping in to support her, King Charles allegedly told Meghan he would be “honoured” to escort her down the aisle. But in his book, “Queen of Our Times,” Hardman claimed Markle responded by asking, “Can we meet halfway?” This was obviously a very unexpected response to the seemingly wholesome offer. According to the author, the reply surprised Charles and reflected Meghan’s desire to present herself as “a confident, independent woman determined to make a grand entrance on her own.”
In the ceremony, Markle ultimately walked part of the way alone before Charles joined her, as she requested, and accompanied her to the altar. The royal wedding actually drew global attention, with Markle wearing a sleek Givenchy gown designed by none other than Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy. The ceremony was widely seen as an unexpectedly modern moment for the British royal family. However, the years that followed have seen nothing but increasing tensions between the Sussexes and the monarchy.
