Reality TV star Spencer Pratt is running for Los Angeles mayor as a registered Republican. He’s also now vocalizing why he supports gun ownership. The 42-year-old from The Hills said that years of backlash due to his popularity on TV raised concerns about safeguarding himself and his family.
Spencer Pratt details his path to being a Republican and why hatred moved him to guns
In an interview on CNN’s The Story Is with Elex Michaelson, which aired on May 21, Pratt explained, “When I was a hated reality star, I got so many death threats, I had so much security and police, and what did they tell me to do? Get a gun. I know people don’t like guns, but LA was dangerous if you’re hated, so I got a gun, my wife got a gun.” He further detailed that he and his wife, Heidi Montag, needed concealed carry weapon (CCW) permits. The only people who supported a CCW were the Republicans.
The reality star expressed, “That was what I aligned with. My safety, my personal safety, my family’s safety. I know people don’t like guns, but when people are threatening your life and your own security is telling you, you need to have home protection, train to — it’s not like just I went to the — you know, go through the proper steps. That was my, that’s it.”
He also vowed that he is “going to be the mayor that puts LAPD in front of every school to make schools safe from guns.” When questioned if there were enough officers to carry out the task, Pratt replied, “I talked to a very knowledgeable law enforcement officer. All you have to do is pick one patrol unit for – and you give them a nice pin that connects to that school, and that’s their street. So, they add that in. So that’s already part of mine, just because obviously I know people don’t like guns, and we need to make everything, especially school, safe, but that is where I connect to – and it’s once you feel fear, and it’s real, you want to protect your family.”
Pratt announced his candidacy in January 2026 and is running against Mayor Karen Bass, who has served as the 43rd mayor of Los Angeles since 2022. They both, including 14 others, will compete at the mayoral election, which will take place on June 2, 2026.
