Pope Leo Seemingly Did ‘6-7’ Gesture During Madrid Visit

Pope Leo unexpectedly became a social media talking point during his visit to Madrid.  He was seen recreating the viral “6-7” hand gesture while greeting people.

The moment only lasted a few seconds, but it quickly caught the internet’s attention and sparked plenty of reactions online. It added a surprising social-media angle to a trip. It was otherwise centered on much bigger topics like faith, migration, and unity.

Pope Leo does 6-7 gesture during Madrid visit

A video from Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Madrid on June 6 captured the head of the Catholic Church appearing to imitate the viral 6-7 gesture while riding through cheering crowds. The moment lasted only a few seconds, but it quickly circulated across social media platforms and sparked discussion among both Catholics and meme enthusiasts ( via Independent).

The gesture is tied to the Six-Seven internet trend. It’s a meme often accompanied by a hand movement that resembles someone weighing two options. While the trend has taken off online in recent months, seeing it seemingly referenced by the pope was not something many expected. The Vatican has not publicly commented on whether Leo intentionally copied the gesture or was simply responding to the crowd.

The viral moment came during a significant trip to Spain. Pope Leo is spending June 6-12 in the country. This is his first visit to a European Union nation outside Italy since becoming pope. His itinerary includes Madrid, Barcelona, Montserrat Monastery, and the Canary Islands. He is also scheduled to inaugurate a new tower at Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia. Moreover, meet migrants who risked dangerous Atlantic crossings to reach Europe.

Leo, the first American pope, has remained in headlines for more than just viral clips. In recent months, he has publicly criticized anti-immigration policies and spoken against war, positions that have put him at odds with President Donald Trump. Their disagreements escalated after Trump criticized the pontiff. Meanwhile, Leo responded that he had “no fear” of speaking out on issues he believes are rooted in the Gospel.
