Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo became one of Hollywood’s most talked-about duos during the “Wicked” press tour. Now, months after the franchise wrapped, fans have begun questioning whether the once inseparable co-stars have quietly drifted apart.
The speculation gained traction after the pair stopped making public appearances together, and Cynthia recently signaled that she was ready to move beyond discussing “Wicked.” However, insiders claimed the situation may be far less dramatic than social media suggests.
What’s happening between once inseparable Wicked stars Ariana and Cynthia?
When “Wicked” premiered in 2024, Ariana and Cynthia’s friendship became almost as big a story as the film itself. Viral interview moments, emotional red-carpet appearances, and their constant praise for one another fueled endless online discussion. Fans particularly fixated on moments such as Ariana holding Cynthia’s finger during an interview and Cynthia rushing to defend her co-star after a fan grabbed Ariana during a promotional event in Singapore.
But according to a source who spoke to The Sun, the attention eventually became overwhelming.
“The whole “Wicked” press tour became way bigger than anyone expected; it stopped being just promo and turned into this massive online obsession with their friendship,” the insider claimed.
The source added that every interaction between the pair was “clipped, analysed and turned into memes,” creating pressure neither star anticipated.
Recent comments from Cynthia only added fuel to the rumors. During a video interview with Variety, she appeared reluctant to revisit the blockbuster musical.
“Do you mind if we do another question that isn’t about Wicked?” Cynthia asked Variety. “Because I feel like I’ve spent the last two years talking about it, and I think that we have an opportunity to start talking about something else.”
She added, “I love Wicked, but I’ve just talked about it. Ad nauseam.”
According to The Sun’s source, Cynthia’s comments were not evidence of a falling out with Ariana. Instead, both women reportedly wanted to reclaim their individual identities after years of being publicly linked together.
“It’s not that there’s bad feeling between them,” the insider claimed. “The friendship was real and very warm at the time, but the internet built it into something far bigger and more symbolic than it actually was.”
The source further alleged that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have intentionally kept their friendship more private as they focus on future projects and careers beyond Wicked.
