Prince Harry detailed the reaction of Kate Middleton to Meghan Markle’s awkward joke in his memoir. This happened during 2019’s Trooping the Colour, a military parade on the occasion of the birthday of the British sovereign. Last year, there were reports that the couple would not attend the event amid the ongoing tensions between them and the royal family. They moved to California in 2020 but haven’t returned to the UK since due to security concerns.
How Kate Middleton reacted to Meghan Markle’s joke
Prince Harry revealed in his memoir “Spare” that there was an awkward silence between Markle and Middleton during the Trooping the Colour in 2019. He stated that the event was their first public appearance as newlyweds. It happened after they arrived from their 10-day honeymoon trip. He noted that everyone was in good spirits and in a positive mood, but that changed for Middleton after she received a response from Markle to her asked question.
Middleton asked the Duchess of Sussex about her thoughts on the celebration, as it was her first time attending it. Markle joked, “Colorful.” This one-word response was followed by awkwardness. “And a yawning silence threatened to swallow us all whole.” Prince Harry detailed the moment.
Moreover, he also revealed that a few days later, Markle embarked on a royal trip with the Queen. The Duke of Sussex said that though Markle was nervous, she and the monarch did get along really well. He mentioned that they also bonded over their love for dogs. He added that the Duchess of Sussex later revealed to him about her conversations with the Queen and how they also spoke about motherhood. Prince Harry revealed that later in the month, both royal couples did try to ease tensions between them (via Fox News).
During her first Trooping the Color event, Markle sported a Carolina Herrera baby pink outfit. Meanwhile, Prince Harry wore a military uniform. 2025 marked the third year in a row when Markle and Prince Harry weren’t invited, as the feud with the royal family continues.
