President Donald Trump wants to move past the war with Iran. At the G7 Summit, held in Évian-les-Bains, France, he said he wants the long-running conflict “in the rearview mirror.” The update comes as his administration prepares to formalize a preliminary peace deal.
Donald Trump’s latest comments on the US-Iran deal
Speaking from the G7 summit on Tuesday, Donald Trump struck an optimistic tone despite the fact that key terms of the ceasefire agreement remain undisclosed. “We’re dealing with people that I think are very rational,” he told reporters, referring to Iranian officials.
The agreement, expected to be signed on Friday in Geneva, has been described by Vice President JD Vance as “a very general” document with limited specifics. Both sides have dialled back the confrontational language that defined recent weeks. However, the secrecy surrounding the memorandum has raised eyebrows internationally.
What is known about the framework suggests it includes provisions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz — a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments — alongside financial incentives for Iran contingent on meeting agreed benchmarks. The deal also sets out a 60-day window for negotiations aimed at ending Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Iranian Vice President Mohammed Reza Aref welcomed the diplomatic opening. He stated his hope that outstanding issues could be resolved. Additionally, Aref urged the Iranian public to respect the outcome of the talks. Questions about transparency have mounted, particularly from lawmakers in Washington. Trump, appearing to joke, said he would like to send the agreement to Congress and tell them they “shouldn’t approve it,” predicting they would then back it.
Tensions have also come up with a key ally. Trump’s administration reportedly denied Israel’s request to review the memorandum before the signing ceremony. The president fears Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would leak the document ahead of its official release (via CNN).
With the Iran war seemingly drawing to a close, Trump has already pivoted his attention. The president held what he described as a “very good meeting” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the summit. Moreover, he indicated towards focusing on ending Russia’s war (via NBC News).
