This Reality Show Is Completely Unhinged — and People Can’t Stop Watching

Reality television has thrived on inviting viewers to watch real people in real situations. There has always been a voyeuristic appeal, and that’s what makes viewers keep coming back. But Fishtank Live takes it a step further and invites viewers to not just watch but actively participate. It pushes the envelope about what it can do to contestants. The show is unhinged, raw, crazy, and unpredictable, and viewers can’t stop watching.

Fishtank Live isn’t new. It’s already on its fifth season. Comedian Sam Hyde and Jet Neptune created the show and premiered it in 2023. It’s an interactive livestreaming reality web show that runs 24/7.

Essentially, it puts real people into the “fishtank” and invites the world to watch as contestants battle it out in challenges that give veteran shows like Survivor a run for their money.

Inside Fishtank Live, the uncensored interactive reality show driving viewer obsession

Fishtank Live is similar to livestreaming shows like Big Brother and previous shows like MTV’s The Real World. However, it only takes watching it for a little bit to realize it’s much, much stranger.

The show takes place in a fully monitored smart house. There are usually 6-10 contestants per season, known as “fish.” They move into the home and battle to be the final winner.

And battle is not an exaggeration. Contestants have had to literally box and wrestle during certain challenges. It is absolutely not for the faint of heart. The premise is isolation, no phones, no weed, and little to no privacy. Only the bathroom is off-camera.

While it sounds similar to the reality TV that we know, Fishtank Live is the OnlyFans of reality TV. It is unedited and runs 24/7 for weeks. Additionally, fans can interact with the contestants. They can pay to send messages or initiate challenges. They can send gifts, vote on polls, and type messages in real time. It’s giving Hunger Games realness.

To stay in the game, contestants have done outrageous things like pour pee on each other, strip, and so much more. It’s hard to exaggerate what goes on. The show has already been kicked out of several neighborhoods.

But no matter how strange things get, fans continue to watch, with more than 500,000 people watching regularly. Producers say the show is now worth over $30 million with sponsorships continuing to come in.

Looks like people really do have a penchant for “peeping into windows” and crazier, unhinged reality TV concepts. Is this type of unedited and unpolished reality content what more fans are looking for now? And if so, where do producers draw the line?
