Donald Trump’s Father’s Day message had very little to do with fatherhood. The president used the holiday to make bold claims about the state of the U.S. economy amid his lowest approval ratings on the issue.
Donald Trump posts about economy on Father’s Day
President Trump celebrated Father’s Day with a Truth Social post declaring the U.S. has the “BEST ECONOMY EVER.” He wrote, “Record Jobs Numbers and Stock Market, BEST ECONOMY EVER! Greatest Military in the World, by far.” Trump added, “We are WINNING on all fronts, WINNING LIKE NEVER BEFORE. GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!!”
However, polling data paints a different picture of public sentiment toward the economy. The latest NPR/PBS News/Marist poll shows only 33 percent of Americans approve of his economic handling. That marks his lowest approval rating on the economy across both presidential terms. It also sits three points below former President Biden’s all-time low on the same measure.
Rising costs continue to weigh heavily on American households across the country. Inflation in May climbed to 4.2 percent, reaching its highest point in three years. The food index rose 3.1 percent over the past year, while energy prices jumped nearly 4 percent.
Prices have surged largely due to disruptions caused by the Iran war. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has blocked goods like oil and fertilizer from exiting the Middle East. Experts say prices could take time to fall even as the Strait begins reopening.
Trump has repeatedly dismissed affordability as a genuine concern for Americans. He called it “a fake word, made up by the Democrats” during remarks last week. He also embraced May’s high inflation numbers, saying he “loved it” and that military action was necessary.
Trump told reporters earlier this month that the economy had been performing well before the conflict. He said, “I hate to do this to you guys but Iran’s going to have a nuclear weapon very soon.”
