It would have capped the number of single-family homes large institutional investors and private equity firms can buy, created a $200 million annual fund to reward communities that expand housing supply, and offered grants to help local governments turn vacant commercial properties into affordable homes. For many Americans squeezed by rising costs, it represented one of the most concrete pieces of housing relief in years.
Then Trump said no. He announced on Truth Social that he would not sign the bill until Congress first passed the SAVE America Act, his preferred election reform measure requiring voters to present proof of citizenship and photo ID.
