According to royal insiders, Prince William intends to expand Buckingham Palace’s public access, allowing overnight stays. He perceives this move from a financial and architectural preservation point of view. The royal household entered a 10-year refurbishment program in 2017, which will be completed next year.
Prince William might turn Buckingham Palace into a hotel, sources suggest
Royal insiders shared an update with Rob Shuter on Prince William’s plans around public access to Buckingham Palace. They claim that he plans to keep the royal household open for royal events as usual, while also making it accessible to visitors. “William doesn’t see this as an either-or. The palace can host kings, presidents and diplomats —and welcome paying guests and museum visitors at the same time,” a source said.
Additionally, the source mentioned that the palace will be open for guests who want to book it for overnight stays and enjoy the royal experience. “Imagine saying you slept at Buckingham Palace. People would travel from every corner of the world for that experience. It would generate millions while preserving the palace for future generations.” According to sources, William believes that royal assets should be leveraged in order to preserve the monarchy.
According to another source, “He’s not sentimental about the building. He’s sentimental about the monarchy. If turning part of Buckingham Palace into a museum and luxury hotel helps secure the institution’s future, he’ll do it.”
Recently, it was reported that Prince Charles and Camilla won’t be moving into Buckingham Palace after it comes out of the refurbishment program. They will continue to stay at Clarence House. However, the royal household is set to remain the “ceremonial and operational center” of the monarchy.
A palace spokesperson further added, “His Majesty retains huge affection for Buckingham Palace and a deep respect for its role in royal and public life. It will be a buzzing hive of royal activity in every other way” (via BBC). The plans for the future of Buckingham Palace have seemingly sparked a debate.
