Nick Reiner, who is accused of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, is seeking access to a trust fund of $1.5 million. The 32-year-old accused wants to use the money to hire a top-tier defense team from a trust set up by the parents, whom he is charged with stabbing to death.
Nick Reiner’s attorneys argue the trust distributions are mandatory despite objections from the trustee
A 136-page probate petition states that half of the trust was to be given to Nick when he turned 30, and the rest when he turned 35. However, according to court filings, the payment due two years ago remains outstanding, reports RadarOnline.
According to the petition, trustee attorney Paul R. Kanin offered “a shifting series of excuses and justifications” for refusing to release the funds. It says the attorney questioned Nick’s competence, though the petition argues those concerns are irrelevant to the trust’s required distribution.
The petition claims, as per People, “These distributions are non-discretionary”, adding, “The trust does not authorize the Trustee to condition these distribution points on any subjective assessment by the Trustee as to Nick’s intended use of those funds.”
As per reports, Nick’s parents previously set up a smaller, separate trust for his benefit, called Nick’s Trust, as they did for his siblings Jake and Romy. Nick is the middle child of legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner.
According to the petition, Jake and Romy initially agreed to retain attorney Alan Jackson on Nick’s behalf but later backed out. Nick is now being represented by public defender Kimberly Greene. Alan was “forced to withdraw because funds were not made available from this Trust or the Reiner family trusts.” Now, Nick wants him back in the case, reports Page Six.
As per CNN, Nick was arrested a few hours after his sister discovered their parents dead at their Los Angeles home on December 14, 2025. He faces two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents. His next court date is a pretrial hearing set for September 15.
