According to Rob Shuter, Princess Diana’s friend shared that the late princess would be “deeply disappointed” by Prince Harry’s media war. The Duke of Sussex reportedly felt that the media’s treatment of his mother brought damage to the royal family. Moreover, he appears to believe that it continues to threaten his own. However, Diana’s friend shared that Harry’s mother had quite a different opinion of the media.

“Diana understood exactly how the media worked,” the friend told the outlet. The friend continued that the royal “never saw every journalist as the enemy. She built relationships with people she trusted and used those relationships to make sure her voice was heard.” The former Princess of Wales reportedly regularly talked to respected royal editors and correspondents. Ex-Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre reportedly acknowledged her acceptance of the paper’s support during the breakdown of her marriage.

“She was incredibly media savvy. She couldn’t control every headline,” another royal insider stated. However, Diana “knew she could shape the conversation by working with journalists she respected.” The insider added, “She played the long game.”

On the other hand, Harry’s friends shared that he believes his legal wars honor his mother’s memory. “Harry thinks he’s protecting Diana’s legacy,” the source said. They continued, “But Diana believed understanding the media was far more effective than declaring war on it. That’s why she would be disappointed by the path he’s chosen.”

Harry and other high-profile figures filed a lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Limited, the publisher of the Daily Mail and The Mail. However, the claims were reportedly dismissed by the High Court on Tuesday.
