Nara Smith opened up about the terrifying moment she sensed something was seriously wrong with her daughter, months before doctors confirmed her fears. Trusting what she described as a “weird gut feeling,” Nara Smith believed her 2-year-old had cancer well before doctors delivered the diagnosis.
How Nara Smith’s gut feeling turned out to be right
The content creator sat down with Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast on Wednesday and revealed the events leading up to her 2-year-old daughter Whimsy Lou’s cancer diagnosis.
Smith recalled a family photoshoot when her mother-in-law first noticed something unusual about Whimsy. They then took the child to the pediatrician.
“So he looks at her, and then I just remember him going quiet,” Smith recalled of the doctor. “He went quiet and very calm and collected, and in that moment, my heart just dropped, and there was this weird gut feeling of being like, cancer.”
That “weird gut feeling” sent Smith, 24, and her husband, Lucky Smith, 28, into a whirlwind of juggling their daughter’s treatment, caring for an infant, and looking after their two other children. The family visited the pediatrician’s office and the emergency room before Whimsy underwent a series of biopsies, ultrasounds, and scans. Nearly a week later, they received a call with the results.
Nara shared that she remembered exactly where she was standing when the phone rang. “It was this weird gut feeling… They’re gonna tell us she has cancer,” she said. “I looked at Lucky, and I’m like, this is it. Let’s brace ourselves … it’s cancer. And then you could tell by the voice, and they were like, we’re so sorry. She has cancer. You guys need to start, like, treatment immediately.”
Following the diagnosis, Whimsy Lou Smith spent five consecutive days in the hospital for treatment every 16 days. Nara described it as a “really, really hard” and “really tough” experience.
She admitted the experience brought her and Lucky closer, even during its hardest moments. “When I had a hard day with it, he picked me up. When he had a hard day, I picked him up, and we were like, let’s just keep going,” she said.
Whimsy is now in remission.
