Elon Musk is reportedly preparing to make a major splash in the 2026 midterms. According to The New York Times, he has approved a massive $100 million to $120 million investment through his political organization, America PAC, to back Republican candidates. The spending is expected to target several high-stakes Senate battles in at least eight states, with additional resources flowing into competitive House races.
America PAC told the newspaper it plans to play both offense and defense, throwing its weight behind key contests while rolling out what it calls an unprecedented voter turnout effort. Axios, meanwhile, reported that a central part of the strategy is to energize Republican supporters who often sit out midterm elections (via Forbes).
The first wave of spending is expected to zero in on pivotal Senate contests in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, and Ohio, with North Carolina, Georgia, and Texas also on the radar if the campaign broadens its reach.
The timing doesn’t appear to be accidential, as Republicans are heading into the midterms looking to hang on to their razor-thin control of Congress, even as recent polls cited in the report suggest Democrats currently hold the edge on the generic congressional ballot and President Trump’s approval ratings have slipped in several surveys.
America PAC previously drew headlines over its widely discussed $1 million voter giveaway in Wisconsin. Campaign finance records filed with the Federal Election Commission show that, more recently, the PAC has poured significant resources into voter engagement efforts, legal expenses, and advertising.
The latest report marks a sharp change from Musk’s recent public comments. After spending more than $260 million during the 2024 election cycle, Musk later acknowledged that he had “got a little too involved in politics” and “got carried away.” He also previously said he would spend “a lot less” from now on.
