Caitlin Clark declined to take a public position on transgender athletes
Caitlin Clark faced the question on Sunday, August 2, and she passed on it. Reporters asked her where she stood on transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, following comments from her teammate. Clark kept her answer narrow.
“I think for us, it’s not really a discussion we really have in our locker room,” Clark said. “I think it’s for leagues and the governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions, but our focus is on basketball.” She indicated the topic had not occupied much of her or her teammates’ attention.
Megyn Kelly rejected that reasoning outright. On The Megyn Kelly Show, the conservative commentator criticized figures across the WNBA, many of whom have voiced support for transgender athletes and inclusivity in sports. She reserved her sharpest words for Clark.
“I’m sorry, Caitlin Clark was directly asked to speak on it, and she was cowardly! She refused to do it,” Kelly said. She then reached for a comparison. “It is one thing to inject politics into your sport where they don’t belong, like Colin Kaepernick kneeling in the middle of professional football games.” Kelly argued Clark’s platform came with a responsibility to answer the question directly.
The transgender debate reached the Indiana Fever through Sophie Cunningham. She told a reporter she opposed transgender athletes competing against biological women, then refused to walk it back. “I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” she stated.
Cunningham later clarified her position on X. She wrote that biological girls, biological boys, trans women and trans men were all welcome at her table, adding that people can disagree and still be kind.
