She says Kate Middleton faces a particularly demanding version of fame. The author discussed the issue in an interview with Marie Claire.
At the heart of Mayer’s argument sits the expectation that Kate should appear almost flawless. The author told Marie Claire that Kate remains human despite the public image surrounding her, and that society’s “projection on to her of perfection” adds “burden” to an already demanding position. The scrutiny becomes even harder because visibility forms part of the job. Mayer pointed out that royal women cannot simply disappear from public attention when they want privacy. “Their job” requires them to remain seen, she told Marie Claire.
Mayer also highlighted a distinctly royal complication. As per her, marriage and family life help sustain the institution itself. She argued that this expectation encourages unusually intense attention toward royal women’s relationships and bodies. In her view, that interest goes further than what many other famous women experience, while men generally face less scrutiny over similar matters. “And such scrutiny is always worse for famous women than famous men,” Mayer said.
That pressure has become part of Kate’s life as she takes on a bigger role alongside Prince William, the future king. Still, Mayer’s take doesn’t point to Kate wanting out of royal life. Instead, she seems to be finding her footing while looking toward the future of her family and the monarchy. Her royal life may look glamorous from the outside, but it comes with constant attention and endless scrutiny over looks, relationships, and behavior.
