Ben Jones, 84, died at home. His wife, Alma Viator, shared the news. She wrote, “I lost the love of my life today. Ben passed from a massive heart attack. He was home resting in his favorite chair waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees.”
“Ben had the most amazing, rich, full life. He loved and was loved by so many. He will be missed. I loved him so so much,” she added.
She also posted a picture of Ben Jones smiling, looking at the camera while holding a dog. According to the New York Times, the actor suffered from alcoholism and was arrested numerous times before he was cast in The Dukes of Hazzard.
During his acting career, Jones starred in the beloved show The Dukes of Hazzard, which premiered in 1979. He played the character of mechanic Cooter Davenport. He starred alongside Tom Wopat, Sorrell Booke, John Schneider, Denver Pyle, Catherine Bach, and Waylon Jennings.
After the show was cancelled, he ran for Congress in Georgia, where he served from 1989 to 1993. Following his tenure in Congress, he opened museums of The Dukes of Hazzard with the support of his wife, according to People.
Soon after news of his demise, Tom Wopat shared a photo of himself with Jones. He wrote, “The Dukes of Hazzard lost another integral part of their cast today.” Ben Jones was a fine friend and a fierce advocate of all the best things we can offer in the entertainment business. He will be sorely missed.”
