Reggie Bannister, the actor and musician who became a cult-horror favorite through the Phantasm franchise, has died at 80. His wife, Gigi Bannister, shared the news after spending his final hours with him at their mountain home in California.

Gigi announced her husband’s death in a Facebook post, writing that she last checked on him early Aug. 9 while he was asleep at their Crestline home. When she returned to his bedside later that morning, she realized he had died.
“He looked so quiet and peaceful. Like he was asleep,” Gigi wrote. She added that knowing he was no longer suffering brought her some comfort.
Gigi also told TMZ that Bannister had wanted to remain at their cabin in Crestline, in California’s San Bernardino County mountains, and was happy to be home during his final moments.
Bannister had dealt with serious health problems for years. Gigi said he had been exposed to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam and later battled Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease. He entered home hospice care in 2025 as his condition declined.
The actor became synonymous with Phantasm after playing Reggie, an ice cream vendor who evolves into a shotgun-wielding hero. Bannister appeared in all five films, beginning with Don Coscarelli’s 1979 original and ending with 2016’s Phantasm: Ravager. His official biography describes the role as a defining part of a career that stretched across four decades.
In a 2016 interview, Bannister reflected on why he kept returning to the franchise, pointing to the loyalty between Reggie, Mike and Jody as one of the story’s enduring strengths.
The Reggie Bannister death news also prompted a tribute from Phantasm creator Don Coscarelli, who remembered his longtime collaborator after working with him for decades.
Away from acting, Bannister maintained a long music career. His official site notes that he performed with the Greenwood County Singers before serving in Vietnam and later returned to both music and acting.
Bannister is survived by Gigi and his daughter, Ellen. His family plans private memorials as well as a separate public celebration for fans and fellow musicians.
