Rep. Ilhan Omar won over four Democratic challengers in Minnesota’s primary Tuesday, securing her party’s nomination for a fifth term with more than 80% of the vote. The landslide victory reaffirms her hold on the 5th Congressional District even after Donald Trump‘s continues attacks on her.

Former immigration prosecutor Julie Trang Le, nurse Abena McKenzie, DNC member Latonya Reeves, and outsider Nate Schluter all failed to crack Omar’s progressive coalition. McKenzie managed just 0.38% in her 2024 primary challenge and fared no better this cycle.
Omar, a Somali-born refugee, has anchored her political strength in a district that houses America’s largest Somali American community. Cook Political Report labels the seat “solid Democrat” with a 32-point partisan advantage, rendering the primary the decisive race. A Republican has not carried the district in decades. She now has won the Democratic primary for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District by more than 80% of the vote.
The rout came recently after Ilhan Omar accused Donald Trump’s administration of deploying ICE to monitor political opponents. A Homeland Security Investigations agent parked outside her Richfield town hall in a vehicle with mismatched plates led to a confrontation with local police. The agent claimed she was conducting an undercover drug operation. Richfield police had received no prior notice.
“HSI’s actions yesterday evening put an entire community at risk,” Omar wrote to the DHS, demanding answers about why the agent remained outside a clearly marked congressional event. The incident amplified her national profile just as voters headed to the polls. The episode followed a January town hall where a man sprayed Omar with an unidentified substance.
All in all, Omar’s dominant showing mirrors a string of progressive victories in Democratic primaries nationwide. Party strategists continue debating whether the leftward surge helps or hurts chances of retaking Congress in 2026.
