Paris Jackson is finally explaining what pushed her to end her engagement to music producer Justin Long. Nearly a year after confirming their split, the singer says the decision followed a period of doubt and a difficult reassessment of what she actually needed from a relationship.
Paris Jackson explains her decision to end her engagement to Justin Long
During an Aug. 12 appearance on Call Her Daddy, Jackson told host Alex Cooper that ending her engagement was ultimately “a choice that I needed to make to be happy.” The official episode description confirms that Jackson discussed the relationships that shaped her and the end of her engagement.
Jackson admitted that she had considered ending the relationship before. However, she kept questioning whether things might improve if she stayed longer. She said conversations with her therapist, coach and trusted friends eventually forced her to examine why she wanted to remain in the relationship.
Those conversations changed her perspective. “Just because someone is a good person doesn’t mean they’re my person,” Jackson said. She explained that she had learned to respect her non-negotiables and recognize when important needs were not being met.
Jackson also made clear that she was not accusing Long of infidelity. Instead, she said knowing someone would remain loyal was not, by itself, enough reason to stay in a relationship that did not fulfill her other major needs.
The Paris Jackson breakup became public on July 31, 2025. After photos showed her crying during a walk in Malibu, Jackson corrected speculation about why she was emotional, writing on X, “those are breakup tears.”
Jackson and Justin Long had been together since 2022 and announced their engagement in December 2024. The reason for their split was unclear at the time, making Jackson’s latest comments her clearest explanation yet.
After ending the relationship, Jackson said she deliberately stopped dating and flirting for a period of time. She focused instead on breaking old coping patterns, reconnecting with herself and figuring out what genuinely made her happy. She described that reset as one of the best things she could have done after the split.
