Molly Sims reveals how toxic beauty standards during the “heroin chic” era sparked constant tears

While talking to Us Magazine, the American fashion model recently discussed several aspects of her career, including the mindset that was prevalent during the “heroin chic” era.

When Molly Sims reflected on the scrutiny she faced, she opened up about a painful experience from the beginning of her modeling career.

Sims said, “It was devastating. I went from Vanderbilt with my sorority sisters, where you’re dipping your fries in a Wendy’s Frosty and you think nothing of it.”

She continued, “I grew up in a very small [town]. I came in during a difficult era called ‘heroin chic.’ [The look] was about 20 pounds underweight and very goth,” she added.

She concluded, “I was from a completely different world, and also the business had changed. [The] beautiful, normal body weight was not [in style] when I entered, and it gave me a lot of pause and a lot of tears.”

During the interview, the 53-year-old fashion model revealed that she tried almost everything to fit the standards of that era. She experimented with grapefruit diets, Atkins, and countless other methods, saying there was hardly anything she did not try.

Talking about Molly Sims’ modeling career, she signed with Next Model Management in 1993. Her career took off as she began working with major brands, including Armani, Chanel, and Giorgio Armani.

Sims first appeared in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit in 2000, and she will return to the iconic magazine in 2026.
