Luigi Mangione faces criminal charges in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. According to CNN, people close to the matter said that negotiations between Mangione’s lawyers and prosecutors are ongoing.
However, sources suggest that discussions are “fluid” and might not result in a “resolution.” Although the 28-year-old’s lawyers have declined to comment on the latest reports, they previously spoke about plea negotiations.
Karen Friedman Agnifilo, who is Mangione’s lawyer, said, “This information attributed to ‘anonymous sources’ is part of a troubling, deliberate pattern by prosecutors and law enforcement to prejudice Luigi, manipulate public opinion, and violate his constitutional right to a fair trial and impartial jury.”
“Every defendant in America is presumed innocent until proven guilty, including Luigi, who, unlike any other defendant, has to fight the same charges twice,” she added.
Mangione had appeared for the final hearing on Tuesday, with jury selection on the case scheduled to begin on September 8. Later, federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York filed a joint request for a conference with a federal judge. However, details about the matter discussed at the conference have not been disclosed publicly. Reports suggested that plea negotiations would be discussed.
Mangione is facing two stalking charges in connection with the death. However, he has pleaded not guilty to both charges. If convicted, he could face lifetime imprisonment without parole. On ther other hand, if plea deal is successful, Mangione could avoid going to trial on the charges; terms would depend on negotiations.
The latest reports of prosecutors and his lawyers negotiating a plea could mark another development in the case. However, his lawyers have not commented on the latest negotiations.
