Jessica Simpson is getting a new documentary about her life and career. Netflix has acquired the feature documentary, according to reports. The project will look deeper at Simpson’s journey as a singer and entrepreneur. It will also revisit her career highlights.

Variety reports that Joe Pearlman will direct the documentary. Pearlman directed the Netflix documentary Robbie Williams. He also worked on Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now and Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. Pearlman also recently directed Netflix’s three-part documentary Mourinho about former Chelsea soccer manager José Mourinho.
Simpson first found fame around the same time as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Mandy Moore. During her career, she has sold over 20 million records. She also starred in MTV’s Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica with her then-husband, 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey. The reality TV show aired for three seasons from 2003 to 2005.
Later, Simpson founded a billion-dollar fashion brand and became a New York Times bestselling author. Her 2020 memoir, Open Book, also became a major part of her career story. Last year, she returned to original music after a 15-year break. She released the EPs Nashville Canyon: Part 1 and Part 2, which featured personal songs that received solid reviews.
Recently, Simpson was also seen on All’s Fair, a legal drama starring Kim Kardashian and Glenn Close. She portrayed the wife of a rock star who wanted to take revenge on his plastic surgeon and ex-wife. Van Toffler, who oversaw Newlyweds as head of MTV Networks, will produce the documentary. His company Gunpowder & Sky will handle production.
Barry Barclay, Floris Bauer, Joanna Zwickel, Pearlman and Jonathan Silberberg will serve as executive producers. The documentary will give fans a closer look at Simpson’s career and life. Pearlman has earned BAFTA, Emmy and Grammy nominations for his documentary work. Netflix has not announced a release date for the project.
