Royal author Andrew Lownie has suggested the two developments may have a connection. According to his claims, Ferguson could have known about the Sussexes’ plans before their return was publicly revealed.
One possibility is that she learned through her daughter, Princess Eugenie. Eugenie recently welcomed her third child, Adelaide, in Portugal. Ferguson was expected to visit her daughter and her family there, creating an opportunity for conversations about the Sussexes’ plans.
However, Lownie believes Markle herself may have been the source. “More likely, I feel, is that Meghan revealed the plan to Ferguson herself,” he wrote for the Daily Mail. The author argues that the two women have a particular understanding of life around the Royal Family. Both have apparently dealt with strained relationships with the Palace while maintaining connections to the institution.
That shared experience, Lownie suggests, could have encouraged them to compare notes. He argues that they could “benefit by sharing their notes” after years of navigating royal scrutiny. Lownie also points to another possible connection. He claims Markle has long viewed Ferguson as an example of someone who managed to maintain a position between royal and private life. Ferguson previously used her public profile for commercial ventures while continuing to appear at major royal events.
That history may have made Ferguson particularly relevant to Meghan, according to the author. He suggests the Duchess of Sussex could have seen her as someone who understood how to remain close to royal circles without being a working royal.
Still, Lownie does not claim Meghan necessarily revealed everything. He suggests she may have simply given Ferguson enough information to understand that something was changing. “Even if Meghan didn’t confide all her plans,” the author argues, she may have “dropped enough hints” for Ferguson to believe it was the right moment to “emerge from cover.”
The timing could now work in Ferguson’s favor. With Harry and Meghan’s UK return attracting considerable attention, her own move back may receive less scrutiny than it otherwise would.
