The Traitors is back for its second series in the UK on BBC One. Fans have been anxiously awaiting the show’s return, after an incredible debut in 2022. Thankfully, The Traitors Series 2 premiere lived up to all expectations. There were even a couple of twists thrown in to make sure everybody was kept on their toes. Here’s what went down.

Paul, Ash, Harry, and a fourth mystery contestant are the first four traitors in The Traitors Series 2.

Paul, Ash, and Harry were initially selected by host Claudia Winkleman. But she then explained that the trio would recruit one more into their “murderous clan” before the night was up. After a brief chat discussing the pros and cons of selecting a handful of fellow competitors, they came to an agreement. Another twist meant that they would have to compete in their first mission before meeting their fellow traitors. And unfortunately for viewers, their identity won’t be revealed until Episode 2.

What was the first mission in The Traitors Series 2?

The Traitors Series 2 opened with a mission for the books. Players had to work together to build a giant beacon and then set it alight in the middle of a Loch. The contestants had to gather and rearrange huge, floating puzzle pieces, using boats and swimming out into the Loch to do so. A replica puzzle was hidden in a bottle, on a piece of paper, on the shoreline.

If the contestants could get the job done in 40 minutes, they’d add £15,000 to the prize pot. Upon failure, they’d get nothing.

To add a further twist, three shields were up for grabs. Anybody who grabbed a shield would be safe from being murdered by the traitors. However, they would still be available for banishment. “What’s more important?” Claudia asked. “Your money? Or your life?”

Kyra, Jaz, and Harry each decided to grab a shield. Kyra said she was “genuinely scared of being murdered,” while Jaz just couldn’t resist temptation. Harry, a traitor, figured that the other players wouldn’t suspect him of being a traitor if he appeared to be scared for his life.

Despite shenanigans, the group managed to pull together and add £15,000 to the pot. But not without a telling off from Claudia. “If you can’t work as a team, how on earth are you gonna catch a traitor?” she asked. Quite!

The Traitors Series 2 continues Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 9 p.m. on BBC One.
